A federal judge vacated a $2 million jury decision for former Medina Police Chief Jeffrey Chen on Aug. 23, citing misconduct by his attorney in influencing the jury. Chen sued the city of Medina over his dismissal in April 2011, charging that it had been racially motivated. The city claims it fired him due to misconduct during his time as chief. Medina Ex-Police Chief Chen trial set to begin

Former Medina Police Chief Jeffrey Chen’s wrongful-termination lawsuit against the city of Medina will finally be seeing a trial by jury. However, the lawsuit will be without several claims that were thrown out by the judge.

The trial is scheduled to begin on March 11.

U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Zilly rejected on Thursday, Feb. 7 Chen’s claim that he was subjected to a hostile workplace. The decision follows an earlier rejection of a claim that multiple members of the Medina city government conspired to fire the then police chief. Read the full story

Medina Police Chief Jeff Chen fired for his controversial actions, denies any wrongdoing

After a surprising resignation — followed by some controversial finger-pointing and an administrative leave order — Medina Police Department (MPD) Chief Jeffrey Chen has finally been dismissed from his position.

“Chief Chen officially has been terminated since Wednesday [April 27], so he’s no longer working for the city,” said Medina City Manager Donna Hanson, in a telephone interview. She described part of her job as being responsible for hiring and terminating employees. Hanson declined to give further comment about Chen’s termination and said to refer to the city’s public records on the case. Read the full story
