Asian Weekly garners three Better Newspaper Awards

 

Northwest Asian Weekly was the recipient of three 2013 Better Newspaper Awards at the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association’s 126th annual convention held Oct. 4 in Olympia.

Reporter Jason Cruz won first place in the Best News Story–Long category for his story, “Family asks for help to free Tacoma resident imprisoned in Nicaragua,” about prison conditions in Latin America. Judges called it “an engaging read.” Read the full story

NWAW staff earns four SPJ awards

NWAW staff earns four SPJ awards

The Western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) presented its Excellence in Journalism Awards to the staff at Northwest Asian Weekly on May 19 at the Renaissance Hotel. NWAW won awards in four categories.

—The staff (which includes Jason Cruz, Andrew Hamlin, Nina Huang, Vivian Nguyen, Han Bui, and Stacy Nguyen) got third place for Special Sections.

—Layout editor Han Bui got third place for Page Design.

—Former editor Stacy Nguyen got second place in Editorial and Commentary and third place in Graphics and Illustration.

These entries were four among more than 2,100 entries in 184 categories received by SPJ this year. (end)

Northwest Asian Weekly (NWAW)’s staff member and reporters garnered seven awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were presented in Everett at the WNPA’s 124th annual convention.

Oct. 1: Northwest Asian Weekly earns five WNPA awards

Northwest Asian Weekly (NWAW) staff members and one of its reporters garnered five awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) Better Newspaper Contest. The awards were presented in Wenatchee at the WNPA’s 123rd annual convention.

Winners from NWAW:

— Reporter Amy Phan won first place in the Best Comprehensive Coverage of a Single Issue category for her “Tony Ng” series.

— Layout Editor and Graphic Designer Han Bui and Editor Stacy Nguyen won first place in the Best Newspaper Website category. Read the full story

This year, the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) awarded former Northwest Asian Weekly (NWAW) Editor Eleanor Lee for her excellent writing in Northwest Asian Weekly’s editorial section. Lee placed third in the opinion category and received her award on May 30 at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. Read the full story
