By Assunta Ng Now that Congressman Jay Inslee has announced his run for governor in 2012, two Asian Americans have declared their candidacy for Inslee’s seat. A few years ago, the Asian community had to persuade folks to run for open seats. Now, we are automatically dreaming big and thinking ahead.

President George W. Bush appointed two Asian Americans to his cabinet. The Asian community was impressed. But President Obama gave us more—three cabinet secretaries, Gary Locke, Steve Chu, and Secretary Eric Shinseki, and many other powerful appointments, including Chris Lu, one of the 25 assistants to the president since 2008.

The first time I heard Nate Miles’ name was during former Mayor Norm Rice’s election in 1989. Miles was one of Rice’s campaign strategists. Many minority publishers wanted advertising. According to a Hispanic publisher, “Miles said he is not going to advertise in our [minority] publications. The campaign does not have enough money.”
