Nov. 10: Seattle Chinese Garden raises $115,000

A crowd gathered at the Imperial Garden Seafood Restaurant to raise $115,000 for the next stage of construction on the Seattle Chinese Garden’s (SCGS) Knowing the Spring Courtyard. Honorary co-chairs and hosts of the event were Christine and Omar Lee, owners of the Great Wall Mall in Renton. They donated meals to 230 guests.

Oct. 1: NAAAP members celebrate with Silk Road Gala

The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) had its 2009 Silk Road Gala with more than 250 guests in attendance, at the Ontario Science Centre. This is the Silk Road Gala’s inaugural year, and it helped to raise more than $1,000, which will be distributed to the Sunnybrook Foundation and the Carefirst For Seniors Foundation.

McGinn ushers in an ‘open source’ transition

“[Seattle Mayor-elect Mike] McGinn explained that rather than making courtesy calls to all the council members, he thought it better to just walk over and meet face to face on a casual basis,” said Seattle City Councilmember Nick Licata in a release. “This is a departure from Mayor Nickel’s style, which was to rely more on his deputy mayor Tim Ceis to walk the council hallway.”

Man meets Korean mom for the first time at age 52

HARRISON, Ark. (AP) — After 52 years on opposite sides of the world, a mother and son have been reunited.

William Whitescarver — or Jo Kyung Nam — of Harrison, and his South Korean birth mother, Choi Chun-Hak of Seoul, met for the first time in more than half a century, when Whitescarver and his children traveled to South Korea in October.
