Owners of 25 restaurants and businesses are kicking the stink of communal dumpsters by enrolling in the City of Seattle Compost Collection service. Food scraps are collected in 60-gallon, 8-yard containers and hauled to Cedar Grove Organics Recycling, LLC for composting.

Husband and wife duo, Warren Chan and Buyun Zhao have introduced the traditional Chinese genre of music to the Seattle community over the last two decades. They founded the first organization dedicated to Chinese music in Washington state.

The Teatro ZinZanni Asia show was a success. The event was a tribute to fashion designer Luly Yang, who designed special costumes for Teatro ZinZanni, and a fundraiser for Kin On and Nikkei Concerns. More than $3,000 was raised through ticket sales and donations.

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels visited Little Saigon, the Vietnamese American business district in Seattle’s International District. This tour was organized by Washington Vietnamese American Chamber of Commerce (WAVA). He visited Little Saigon’s business owners and expressed his desire to see more city investment in Little Saigon, enlarging buses’ free bus zones, and improving the physical appearance of the streets.

Quieter and longer lasting, dragon boat racing of the East — featuring boats with colorful dragon heads on their bow — has some similarities with drag racing in the West. The purpose of both activities is to find out who can reach the finish line in the shortest amount of time.

Public indignation was aroused in south Seattle when Joseph Aqui, a level III sex offender, was relocated into the Othello neighborhood without the knowledge of many of the nearby residents. Othello is a predominately Asian neighborhood.

On Aug. 3, a new e-mail application launched which will allow users to write an e-mail message in English and then forward it with Chinese and English text side-by-side. This solves the language barrier with China and sets a new standard in e-mail communication.
