As an Asian American growing up in the 1960s in the middle of the white American West (Nevada), I was subjected to racial insults and the immediate threat of bodily harm. I was a scrawny 14-year-old picked on by brawnier upperclassmen or a gang of young white men.

Letter: Little Saigon needs to grow

The Vietnamese community, of course, agonizes over what Little Saigon will mean to their children. It is a business enterprise zone where the fashions and people of Vietnam open their doors to commerce. At present, it is a wing and a satellite of the International District/Chinatown lacking a sense of place.

The Obama camp’s local methods “There are people that will not vote for a person of color,” former Washington state Gov. Gary Locke told a gathering of voters at an event sponsored by the Washington State Asian American Pacific Islanders for Obama on Saturday night, Oct. 4th. He told the young voters in attendance at the Typhoon! restaurant in downtown Seattle that regardless of the polls, “not to take the election for granted.”
