Dear Editor,
This is Tyler and Brandon Nguyen’s (alumnus from previous SYLP Summer Programs) mom. I just read an article in your most recent issue titled, “In aging China, old woman sues children for care.”
It was a very moving and emotional, well-written and thought provoking article. I felt sorry for the old lady named Zhang. It made me think about filial piety and how it affected my life with older parents, and my children later on — how they would care for me. I cannot believe that these families are so poor, living on a measly wage of $16 per month. It made me want to send money to them just so they had food on the table and enough to take care of their elders.
Thank you for providing articles like this one that I can share with my American-born teenagers. I always look forward to each issue and the articles hit close to home because they are local news about our Asian community.
