King County Assessor Lloyd Hara and his mother, Shuko Hara

Former Seattleite Shuko Hara, mother of King County Assessor Lloyd Hara, is 98 and now living in Delaware to be close to her daughter.

I couldn’t help but wonder, how does someone live so long and do so well?

Shuko has her own apartment in an independent assisted-living community. According to her daughter-in-law, Liz, Lloyd’s wife, “She plays bridge twice a week, reads voraciously, and especially enjoys books about Seattle. She loved the snacks that Lloyd brought to her from Uwajimaya.”

She continued, “Shuko uses a walker to get around, but can move faster than most 20-year-olds once she gets moving. Lloyd and Shuko used to attend Seahawks and Huskies games together as they both had season tickets. She still roots for her home teams here.”

If you want to live long, make sure you are active every day. And read, read, read newspapers. Of course, I like to plug ourselves.

We miss you, Shuko! (end)
