On Oct. 17, The Hokubei Hochi Foundation Board of Directors announced establishment of the foundation as a new nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.

The Hokubei Hochi Foundation (HHF)’s mission is to promote and preserve the culture of the Japanese American and Japanese community through educational and cultural projects and activities in the Pacific Northwest.

The Foundation plans to sponsor student internships with community newspapers, which will include travel to Japan to connect young leaders in both countries, a particularly important need in the aftermath of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Elaine Ikoma Ko, a long-time community leader, will serve as HHF’s executive director. (end)
