Seattle Chinese Garden still has bricks for sale

A free-standing wall in the entry court to the Seattle Chinese Garden will soon be covered with hundreds of polished green granite bricks inscribed with the names of Chinese families and other friends of the garden.

On Oct. 15, the Seattle Chinese Garden (SCG) will unveil its first completed donor recognition wall in the entry court. The ceremony will celebrate all that have supported SCG by ordering green granite bricks, which are engraved with names to honor family and friends.

Members of the Chinese and Asian communities account for more than 50 percent of bricks reserved to date.

“Many decades from now, no one will know that any of us once lived here unless we leave a small reminder of our names and contributions to the community,” Nora Chan, a community leader, explains. “It’s wonderful to imagine that my great-great-grandchildren might visit the Seattle Chinese Garden, point to my name on a brick, and know that their ancestor helped build this beautiful place.”

There are about 100 more bricks available for purchase on a first come, first served basis. Orders must be received by Aug. 25 to ensure mounting on the wall by October. ♦

For more information and an order form, call 206-934-5219 or visit  www.seattlechinesegarden.org. SCG is located at 6000 16th Ave. S.W., on the north entrance of South Seattle Community College.
