Characters consisting of many strokes are hard to memorize. One needs to learn as many as 8,000 characters to read a Chinese newspaper. There are more than 100,000 Chinese characters.
And we have more than one hundred dialects, but the written language has a traditional and a simplified version. Most can read both, for the simplified version is derived from the traditional. ♦
