My role is to make lemonade out of lemons in this poor economy. While we cannot rely on big advertisers like we used to, the small guys give me hope. The good thing is that we have many small potential advertisers.
For every joyful event I attend, I take guests’ photos and then ask them to pay a small sum for a pictorial ad to congratulate the honoree or the organization. This happens to provide an efficient solution to our problem.
Usually, we take lots of pictures during an event and end up using only a few. Sometimes, it is hard to decide which pictures to put in the newspapers. Is this a quality photo for print? Are the people in the photo important players for the occasion? Have the people appeared in the papers recently? Is there enough diversity in the group of photos we choose?
It is quite difficult to meet all of these criteria.
With pictorial ads, everyone’s photo would be in the newspapers as long as they pay for it. Although this is a lot more work in producing the ad, it is a tool for community participation and a way for individuals to support a community newspaper. ♦
