The third Chinese Remembering conference, part of the Chinese Remember project, was held in Lewiston.
The event represents the third and final year of the Chinese Remember project, which is related to R. Gregory Nokes’s book, “Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon.”
The conference involved a day-long trip into Hells Canyon to the Chinese Massacre Cove, the site where Chinese gold miners were massacred in 1887.
Nokes is a former reporter and editor for The Associated Press and The Oregonian. He was the first to write a story about the murders of the Chinese miners in a 1995 article. In his book, he explains what he uncovered about the massacre. ♦
