Thanks for checking in to it. I’m pretty sure it isn’t true, which doesn’t diminish the diversity or the Rainier Valley, but maybe does cast a light on the silliness of competitive diversity.

Tiffany has tried contacting the Census to verify the information but hasn’t heard back yet. She unfortunately got her original information from a KOMO news report, which may not be true. I’ve edited the story to reflect this. Thanks for keeping us on our toes.

It’s been interesting to watch how this “diverse zip code” thing spreads around. The statement that 98118 is the most diverse zip code in the country is completely unfounded. The Census Bureau has never made that statement. This is never cited in any of the articles that makes reference to it. It may be a nice idea, but a media outlet and a journalist should not make sure something is true before repeating it.

Factual note: The Rainier Valley Community Development Fund does not support youth oriented programs. The RVCDF is a loan fund that assists local businesses with working capital and other business needs. We also fund commercial real estate projects in the Valley. I believe you might have been referring to the City of Seattle’s Neighborhood Matching Fund Program which does fund the numerous programs mentioned in the article.

I read your article on the 98118–.

I was really disappointed that you did not include one of the most active organizations residing in area code 98118, HOMESIGHT.

HomeSight (www.homesightwa.org) led by Tony To,has been around for 20 years and is one of the foremost leaders in affordable housing in the country.

HomeSight under the leadership of Tony To, is a non-profit community development organization; a mortgage broker and a developer that provides technical assistance to the many businesses in the area. HomeSight is the supporting organization that started the MLK Businesses Association.

HomeSight has also built affordable housing and continue to provide purchase assistance to many first time homebuyers in area code 98118.

Next time you do an article on 98118- please be more inclusive.
