Letter: ‘Why we support McGinn’

To the Editor:

It is a testament to our API community’s evolution and growth that we have different opinions while focusing on common goals relating to the community.

I wish to offer my support for Mike McGinn for mayor. I have joined many API leaders including Rep. Bob Hasegawa, Ruth Woo, Frankie Irigon, Tony Lee Diane Narasaki, Al Sugiyama, Cherry Cayayabab, Thao Tran, and many others in supporting Mike.

I support Mike because of his demonstrated commitment to community advocacy as an activist and environmentalist. He has demonstrated a willingness to take on the status quo. He has a bottom-up approach.

The current administration has been criticized as being too top-down and non-responsive to community voices. Mike’s style is more bottom-up, inclusive, and intentional. I have found him to be approachable … one comfortable at leading a large forum, or simply sharing notes over coffee.

Mike McGinn would be an effective, inclusive, and decisive mayor in a rapidly changing and diverse city.
— Kip Tokuda, former State Rep. from the 37th Legislative District.
