Blog: A traditional Chinese wedding with prime rib

As a guest to Robin and Kris Leong’s wedding on Aug. 8, I must conclude that Seattle Westin Hotel is an ideal venue to host a traditional Chinese wedding ceremony.

No, it did not serve a Chinese dinner — just the Chinese roast pig for the reception. The main entrees were either prime rib or salmon.  I had the delicious prime rib and felt wonderfully satisfied.

Born and raised in Asia, I have seen a traditional Chinese wedding a thousand times in Chinese movies, but have never seen the whole ceremony in real life. The part we always saw in Chinese wedding banquets was only the bride during a tea ceremony, dressed in the traditional red Chinese wedding gown, toasting guests.

The Leong wedding began with the procession of the groom picking up the bride in a sedan chair followed by many dignitaries dressed in fancy Chinese costumes from the Qing Dynasty. A large hall was required to perform such an elaborate show so that the audience can enjoy the fun and festive atmosphere of the wedding.

The ceremony was a highlight in the wedding, and 400 guests were clicking away with about 50 cameras to capture the moment.
