On May 27, George Uchida passed away from complications from a head injury. Uchida was a former scoutmaster who mentored U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke.
Uchida was born on April 11, 1924 in Seattle to Otomatsu and Mio Uchida. He was interned with his family during WWII and enlisted in the famous Nisei 442nd Division at the age of 21 in 1945.
He was then chosen to be in military intelligence because of his schooling in Japanese language. This led him to more language schools and the rank of master sergeant near the Korean border.
Uchida was an accomplished photographer, welder, carpenter, plumber, electrician, and general handy man.
He is survived by his son, Jay, his daughter, Robin, and his grandchildren. His wife, Kimie, preceded him in death. ♦
