Lucky in love

Kasper Lee, a business manager, and Jason Wu, a police officer, are counting on a lucky start to their married life. The couple has set a wedding date of Aug. 8, 2008. Eight is considered a symbol of luck and prosperity in the Chinese culture. The luck doesn’t end with the date, however. Lee and Wu have also incorporated the number eight into their wedding with a reception time of 8 p.m., a lion dance with eight lions, 18 tables with 180 guests, eight wedding attendants and an eight-layer cake.

Other couples thinking of a wedding date of Aug. 8 might be, well, out of luck. Many wedding facilities book a year or more in advance, and auspicious days like Aug. 8, 2008, can have waiting lists years in advance.

Don’t despair, however. King County District Court Judge Mark Chow suggests getting married on Aug. 8 and just having the ceremony on another day.

Applications for marriage licenses can be handled in person or by mail. Washington state law requires a three-day waiting period before the license becomes valid, and the license is valid for 60 days, which means the marriage ceremony must be performed before the 60-day expiration of the license.
