The mother and son who were found fatally stabbed in Beacon Hill Dec. 15 have been identified as Patricia and Terrence Uno, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Medical Examiner’s office determined Terrence Uno’s cause of death as a stab wound to the torso and classified his death as a suicide. Patricia Uno’s cause of death was multiple stab wounds, and classified as a murder.

Terrence Uno, 52, had been a resident at Kawabe Memorial House until “a couple months ago,” before moving out to live with his mother, according to an unnamed Kawabe staff member. The staff member said that Terrence Uno was dying of cancer, and speculated that he wanted to “die by a sword and maybe his mother got in the way.”

Police found a knife a few yards from Terrence Uno’s body, lying facedown on a street nearby the house Patricia Uno, 79, was found in. No one else was found in the house.

According to a family friend who requested anonymity, Patricia Uno had called another son, who was golfing, the day she died and said that his brother Terrence was “acting very funny” and he should come over right away. The son immediately went to her house, at the intersection of Beacon Avenue South and South Cloverdale Street, but discovered he was too late.

The family friend confirmed that Terrence Uno had terminal brain cancer and said that he also suffered from bipolar disorder. According to the family friend, Terrence Uno was “devastated” about the cancer and had previously expressed a wish to die.

The family has repudiated the murder classification and said that it was an accident caused when Patricia Uno tried to prevent her son from killing himself, according to the family friend.

A family member, also speaking on the condition of anonymity, said, “No one knows exactly what happened.” The Uno family has declined to officially speak to the media.
