Executive Director Sue Taoka is leaving the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda), but will continue her work in urban development. Taoka has built a model organization in the International District that positively impacts the entire Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

“Under Sue’s visionary leadership, SCIDpda has had a tremendous impact, not only on the International District neighborhood itself, but also upon all the people she touched,” said SCIDpda Council Chair Albert Shen, “Her legacy will always be remembered in this community.”

Under her leadership, SCIDpda has made remarkable headway in implementing this vision. International District Village Square 1 and 2, recognized as two of the most innovative non-profit housing and community developments in the city and the neighborhood’s largest public-private project, were completed during her tenure. She oversaw the restoration of landmarks such as the Bush Hotel and New Central Building. These community treasures stand as a testament to Taoka’s ability to rally community support and the resources needed to preserve and revitalize the International District.

“We will never be able to replace Sue’s dedication and passion,” said Shen, “but thankfully she has set this organization up to succeed after she moves on.”

The Council has set a goal of hiring a new executive director by early fall. Sue departs with gratitude and the best wishes from the Council. Her last day as executive director will be June 13, 2008, after which she will serve as the executive vice president of urban programs at ShoreBank Enterprise Cascadia.

Paul Mar, current project manager with SCIDpda , will serve as the acting executive director. Mar was instrumental in the establishment of SCIDpda 30 years ago and worked on the development of the award-winning International District Village Square projects. A well-respected community and regional leader, he sits on several boards and was a 2008 recipient of the Organization of Chinese American Golden Circle Award.
