THE BUZZ IS GIRLS CAN SPELL

The three finalists of the Regional Spelling Bee, held March 30 at Town Hall Seattle, are (from left) Elizabeth Zhang, Amy Tamura and Julia Tombari. Shelley Pu, the sister of last year’s winner, Jason Pu, was the fourth finalist. With the final four all Asian American girls, spelling looks to be the next big field for Asian American students to strive in, much like classical music and golf have been in the past. Both Julia and Elizabeth are immigrants, Julia having been adopted from China when she was 12. Elizabeth came over from China with her family when she was 3.

Julia’s mother, Debra Tombari (far right), congratulates her daughter on a job well done. Elizabeth went on to win the competition, which she had also won two years ago, in 2006. “This time, the words were easy!” she said.

The Regional Spelling Bee was sponsored by the Seattle P-I.
