The Chinese National Soccer Team will face the Mexican National Soccer Team April 16 at Qwest Field.

“Since we are still 12 months away from our first home match, the opportunity to host these two teams will provide our fans a taste of the world’s game in anticipation of what they will experience next spring at Qwest Field,” said Major League Soccer Seattle Owner and General Manager Adrian Hanauer.

Seattle recently acquired a major league soccer team, set to begin its season in April 2009.

The much anticipated China-Mexico match was organized by the MLS in partnership with Soccer United Marketing. The Washington State China Relations Council is also organizing a contingent of members and friends to sit together in the stands, showing support for the China National Team.

The match starts at 8 p.m., with pre-match festivities in the north parking lot where a “soccer palooza” atmosphere is anticipated when gates open at 6 p.m. with a variety of planned family activities.

The Chinese team is coached by former Serbian star Vladimir Petrovic and led by young Manchester United striker Dong Fangzhuo. China is currently preparing itself for the upcoming AFC World Cup Qualifiers. Mexico will be coached by legendary Hugo Sanchez and will feature young stars who will compete on their Olympic team this summer.

A major match between two countries where soccer is hugely popular is expected to increase the excitement for soccer locally. From March 27 to 31, MLS Seattle fans can vote online at www.mlsinseattle.com for the team’s name from three finalists, also chosen with fan input.

Ticket prices are $20-$50 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com or 206-628-0888; MLS Seattle at www.mlsinseattle.com; or in person at Qwest Field’s box office at 800 Occidental Ave. S., Seattle. To attend as a member of the Washington State China Relations Council contingent, order tickets by e-mailing heinlein@wscrc.org.
