Erasing the color lines
::Our annual youth issue

Photographer’s statement: My name is Kaitlin Banfill and I am a senior at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle. When I was little, I loved to read National Geographic and look at the photos of people from around the world. So naturally, when I took photography in school, I was drawn to portrait photography. There is an endless variety in people, in their facial features, their body types and their expressions. A good portrait should capture and convey something about the model’s personality and character.

My first models were my friends and family, but now I am beginning to contact people for the specific purpose of taking their photos. Because I am half-Chinese and half-Caucasian, I am particularly interested in people who are ethnically mixed.

For my senior project, I am currently working on a series of photographs of people who are half-Asian, hoping to show the diversity, energy and beauty of people like me.
